The Moments Before Yes

Before Lauren ever said yes, there had already been weeks of planning, carefully held secrets, family coordination, and more than a few prayers that everything would unfold exactly as intended. What looked to her like a simple stop to pick up a watch on March 14, 2026 had already become something much larger behind the scenes: a custom ring shaped with family meaning, picture frames arranged after hours inside Kimball's Jewelers, and loved ones waiting nearby for the moment Nick hoped she would never forget.

For Nick, the proposal itself was only one part of what made the evening meaningful. Long before the question was asked, he had been working closely with stylist Kyle to create the ring Lauren would one day wear, while carefully building a surprise that would allow both the ring and the proposal itself to unfold in the same place.

Their story had begun less than a year earlier after meeting on a dating app. They had been together 11 months and 10 days when Nick proposed, though for him, certainty arrived much earlier.

“I have never met anyone that I clicked with like I did with her. From day one, it almost seemed too good to be true.”

That certainty shaped every part of the ring he created for her. When Nick’s grandmother passed away at the end of 2023, his family invited him to choose pieces from her jewelry collection. Long before he knew exactly when this day would come, he already understood that if he ever proposed, he wanted part of his grandmother’s story to remain present in it, and chose diamond earrings to be a part of his future.

“She was one of my favorite people in the entire world. I was hoping for this day she would still be here to see. Since she couldn’t be, I was still able to make her be there and with us for the rest of our lives.”

The custom process began quietly when Nick and Lauren first visited Kimball’s together under the pretense of simply looking at rings. While Lauren shared what naturally drew her eye, Nick and Kyle were already noting every detail including shapes, proportions, and design elements that felt most like her. Later, when Nick returned on his own, much of the direction had already been established. And, for Nick, the experience felt seamless from beginning to end, not only in building the ring but in the trust that shaped everything around it.

“My experience with Kimball’s was nothing short of perfection. Kyle was there every step of the way. He walked me through each detail and helped me create the perfect ring for Lauren.”

As the ring came together, another idea emerged. During one of those conversations, Danny, the Kimball’s owner, asked whether Nick had considered proposing at Kimball’s itself. What began as a possibility quickly became the obvious choice: a place already tied to the ring, private enough for surprise, yet personal enough to hold everyone waiting just out of sight.

“A lot of people try to come up with spontaneous ways of proposing, but this opportunity was unlike any other.”

The plan became precise. Lauren would come in after hours expecting nothing unusual. Nick brought picture frames for Kyle to arrange ahead of time, family and friends were hidden nearby, and everyone waited for the moment to unfold.

When the time came, Nick remembers very little of what he intended to say. He admits he was never more anxious and nervous in his entire life, and only remembered two sentences from his proposal.

“From the moment I met you, I knew you were the one. Lauren Rebecca Gentry, will you marry me?”

The important words landed, and Lauren said yes.

What she did not know was that another surprise was still waiting. Moments later, family and friends stepped forward from hiding, something Nick says she never suspected at all.

“She was shocked, happy, and had zero clue they were there.”

The evening continued beyond the proposal itself. Lauren was surprised yet again with more friends at their dinner celebration after they left Kimball’s. For Lauren, what stayed with her most was how many people carried part of the day before it ever arrived.

“It wasn’t just one day. It was every text, every secret kept, every plan made, every mile traveled, and every prayer and kind thought sent our way.”

She describes Nick as her best friend, her safe place, and her greatest blessing.

“Life already feels more grounded and joyful because of him.”

Now that the proposal is behind them, they are allowing this season to settle in before wedding planning fully takes shape. For Nick, even the smallest changes already feel meaningful.

“I think she is very excited to wake up every day and call me fiancé—as I am.”

Their ring now holds more than a proposal. It carries family memory, careful intention, and the quiet work of many people who helped shape one evening into the beginning of everything that comes next.
